We put 5 Questions to Jon from Level 8 Comics...
Q) What’s the secret origin story of Level 8 Comics and how did it all come together?
Level 8 Comics was born of necessity really following my first successful Kickstarter campaign for Brethren Born #1. From having a dream to receiving a very considerable sum of money to fulfill said dream was quite a quick process and I didn't just want to put it in a personal account which wasn't a transparent way of doing things in my opinion. So I needed an account for the money and out popped Level 8 Comics, a play on my surname but it has since become a little more.
Q) What inspires you to create?
Everyday life and current news really. Hearing a funny or heartbreaking story gets my head spinning around and I constantly think of ways of telling a story that is new and original but with familiar themes that I hope people will connect with on some level. With all that is going on right now in the world, there is plenty to choose from but I also hope to take people on a quick vacation away from all the horrible shite that occurs on a daily basis. I have several stories on the go with even more in development ranging from super hero to slice of life, from quasi religious/science/history epics to violent modern day hitmen. All from watching Sky News.
Q) Since you started, what moment has been your highlight so far?
Honestly can't pick. So many highlights in such a short space of time. Waking up at 4am to see the Kickstarter had been funded. Seeing Brethren Born #1 as a real comic for the first time. Being asked to be part of the Close 2 Immortality Collective. The list goes on but the one that does stick out the most is talking to a friend of mine who had bought Brethren Born for his son. Since reading it, he has started reading regularly (which he has never done before) and has even started making his own comic. Amazing.
Q) This is your second year at True Believers, what can people expect to find at your table on the day for 2017?
Hopefully a little more of a selection than 2016. Definitely the first two installments of Brethren Born, possibly even issue #3 if I pull my finger out. I have stories in two books, The British Showcase Anthology Volume 2 by Markosia and the other Comichaus: The new British Anthology Monthly so should have copies of those for comic fans as they will both be filled with amazing stories by brilliant creators. The usual art prints, badges, postcards and maybe a couple of new games for people to play and get even more involved with comics.
Q) If you could pick one line that inspires you from a comic or nerd culture as your life motto, which would you choose?
The red pill. Always take the red pill.
And don't forget to stop by Jon's table at #TBCF2017 and say "Hello".
