We put 5 Questions to Alice from Curios Herring...
Q) What’s the secret origin story of Curious Herring and how did it all come together?
I have been a huge fan of Nintendo and gaming since I was a child, and I have also had a huge passion for photography, but it was only last year when I started to put the two together to try and create images that bring the gaming world to life! The name Curious Herring came from a family joke from when I was younger, and decided to use it as my art name ever since! As a couple we do have different styles of art, where I mainly focus on photography, Joe (Hunter) focuses on comic related charcoal paintings. The name Hunter was inspired by Hunter S Thompson whos work has influenced his life. We have never done anything like this before, so we are very excited to put our creativity together!
Q) What inspires you to create?
We have both been creative since we were young, as Joe grew up working in the tattoo business, he has had a passion for creating photo realism and portraits through his work, working under the name Hunter. His work is inspired mainly by comic books and movies which he has grown up around. My inspiration for Curious Herring Photography is largely inspired by Nintendo, alongside other geeky things I love such as Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. Video games help inspire my work to create something that reflects the game, or hopefully to just remind others of their own childhood!
Q) Since you started, what moment has been your highlight so far?
For myself it has been all the support I have had from those who enjoy my work which continues to push me to my potential. Joe has built up a great customer base for his work and continues to amaze people with his art. It's the people around us who support our work that give us the highlights of what we do.
Q) This is your first year at True Believers, what can people expect to find at your table on the day?
Our table will mainly be set with photographs, paintings and art work that focuses on gaming, comic books, and movies. Some art is painted, some made with hama beads, and even some smaller pieces such as hand made charms!
Q) If you could pick one line that inspires you from a comic or nerd culture as your life motto, which would you choose?
Mine would have to be: "I think that inside every adult is the heart of a child. We just gradually convince ourselves that we have to act more like adults" - Shigeru Miyamoto
And Joe's would be: "Do, or do not, there is no try " -Yoda, Star Wars
