5 Question Interview #81

We put 5 Questions to Tom from The Art Of Tom Malin...

Q) What’s the secret origin story of The Art Of Tom Malin and how did it all come together?

I have been drawing all of my life and have always loved comics, cartoons, toys etc. When I left school with not many GCSEs; only an A* in art and a B in science, with sever dyslexia, I found education difficult but I decided to go to college to learn art and design. Whilst there I discovered I was pretty good at comic book art, design and animation so I ended up doing my BA hons degree and then a masters in animation at Gloucestershire University.

However due to jumping through hoops to pass modules my passion for art was lost slightly, until about two years ago when I was talking with my gym partner and close friend Sid about my art and he suggested I pick up my pencil again and do some 30 day challenges, this pushed me to draw what I loved again and not have to write an essay about why. My friend Sid, along with my partner Charlotte, have helped me gain my passion back.

Since getting back on the band wagon I have done lot of commissions from Marvel to DC etc and from theses I have gone on to create prints of my work that I have then sold on at the conventions. These have been very well received and people seem to like my work so hopefully maybe I will get a comic book gig soon enough, my dream would be to do a Transformers cover page. Then I can die happy!

Q) What inspires you to create?

Other artists inspire me on a daily basis, however my girlfriend Charlotte inspires me also because she is always pushing to achieve more.

Q) Since you started, what moment has been your highlight so far?

The highlight so far was doing the Banbury Comic Con exclusive print of the bounty hunters from the original Star Wars Trilogy. They all said how lovely my art was and bought one to have of their own, which is a massive compliment. I also got a pat on the back and told I have potential from Nick Roche.

Q) This is your second year at True Believers, what can people expect to find at your table on the day?

Some high quality art prints (generated from some of my original sketches) that have been digitally painted to create a stunning piece. My portfolio has increased in size since last year so people will be spoiled for choice.

Q) If you could pick one line that inspires you from a comic or nerd culture as your life motto, which would you choose?

Not really a nerd quote but Dwayne Johnson once said “Success isn’t always about greatness, it’s about consistency. Consistent, hard work gains success. Greatness will come.”

Thanks Tom!
