5 Question Interview #87

We put 5 questions to Darrell Thorpe from Death By Heroism...

What’s the secret origin story of Death By Heroism and how did it all come together?

A few years back I was creating loads of characters and vistas under the name Happy Ghetto. People enjoyed looking at the illustrations but always wanted to know what it was all about. Que Ed Gamester, my great friend, champion & the author of our first novel 'A Rum Run Awry'. Together we delved into the chaos that was the Happy Ghetto and started telling tales that lurked inside this mysterious world.  The actual name Death By Heroism comes from a mantra I cooked up in said world and was part of the Bonehead Skate Krews crest.

What inspires you to create?

I read A LOT of comics, trade backs & watch toooo many movies. These usually throw some odd thoughts into my head and from there it really is a need to get them out onto paper before I go crazy. I find it really therapeutic.

Since you started, what moment has been your highlight so far?

Biggest highlight is getting out book ‘A Rum Run Awry’ published, it took two years we re-wrote and re-drew it so many times. I remember being at TBCF two years ago with the initial draft and people being excited to see it. It took almost as long to get it printed and available to buy as it did to create, and for that i’m proud.

I think i am really proud of how tenacious Ed and I are as a team. It was such a strain on our lives as we work full time, so we would have to move heaven and earth to get together some times to create.

This is your third year at True Believers, what can people expect to find at your table on the day for 2017?

FINALLY our 300 page hardback book ‘A Rum Run Awry’. Three new comics 'Sub Diablo', ‘The Forpe Dimension' & I will hopefully be debuting my latest creation ‘Tales from the Mini-Verse’. All this with figures, original art and more!

If you could pick one line that inspires you from a comic or nerd culture as your life motto, which would you choose?

Where we’re going we don’t need roads…

Thanks Darrell.
