5 Question Interview: Guest Edition #11

We are delighted to welcome the fantastic John-Paul Bove back to True Believers Comic Festival for a second year.

John-Paul is a UK based freelance comic book writer and colourist who has worked for a number of UK and US titles.

He is perhaps best known for his work on Transformers for IDW and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for Panini. He has also worked on a wide variety of titles such as Judge Dredd, Doctor Who, Dungeons and Dragons: Baldur's Gate,  GI Joe, Godzilla, and My Little Pony.

As well as licensed titles he has numerous creator owned titles including UnEarth, an atmospheric horror book available at the show!

To celebrate John-Paul's return, we put 5 Questions to him...

What’s the secret origin story that led to you working in comics?

I was bitten by a radioactive typewriter... OK, what really happened was my local comic shop had a regular meeting of people who want to create comics and we all got collaborating. I wrote and then taught myself to colour comics and worked on a number of small press and fan projects. Some of my collaborators broke in and when they did they brought me along with them. By then I had hundreds of pages of artwork I had done in every spare minute of every day to show as samples.

What inspires you to create?

I honestly cannot NOT create. I don't know how to stop. I am inspired by everything. My biggest enemy is time, I wish I had more of it!

What’s your favourite thing about what you do?

Getting a chance to create. To tell stories. To see people's reactions. To see the work in print.

Since you started, what moment – so far - has been your highlight?

It remains working on Transformers Regeneration One. Simon Furman, Andrew Wildman, Geoff Senior and Stephen Baskerville were enormous parts of my childhood and made me want to tell stories of my own. To work with them on the continuation of the book that made me want to work in comics was just the most perfect experience of my life. Also a lot of my heroes became my colleagues and later my friends. That still blows me away.

If you could pick one line that inspires you from a comic or nerd culture as your life motto, which would you choose?

"Never surrender dreams"

Thanks John-Paul.
