We put 5 questions to Redshift Press' Chris Sides...
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Chris Sides, I’m the writer half of Redshift Press, an indie publisher distributing work created by me and my long-time collaborator, artist Chris Travell.
What can people expect to find at your table at True Believers?
A couple of fine-looking young gentleman with some great comics for you to read. Okay, the ‘young’ bit’s a lie. As is the ‘fine-looking’. We’ll have comics, though. We’ll have DARK MATTER, our first self-published anthology of short tales, each with a dark twist/theme.
WHISPERING SANDS, a one-shot horror thriller, with artwork by Freja Steele (https://www.facebook.com/frejasteeleart), that we’re launching at Thought Bubble in November 2015. And – limited copies of Markosia’s BRITISH SHOWCASE anthology (in which we had a couple of stories), UNLAWFUL GOOD, a US crime anthology in which I had a story and more...
What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
A bit of a cop out answer, but the whole process. Having an idea and characters pop into your head, developing it, the buzz you get from making connections when outlining and researching, hearing the characters ‘talk’ to each other when scripting and then seeing it all come to life once the artwork starts rolling in. I suppose there’s nothing quite like holding the printed book in your hand with the thought that you made this and it’s going to go out into the world for people to read, but it’s the actual process of world-building, that’s the fun bit. And being able to sit and work in my underpants, of course. Bonus.
What was the first comic you collected?
Astonishing Spider-Man. It’s the only book I could get my mitts on when I was younger and loved every single page.
If you had to recommend one comic (or story arc) to people, which would it be?
Without a doubt, OCEAN by Warren Ellis, Chris Sprouse and Karl Story. It’s Ellis on top form; amazing story, amazing visuals – it’s incredibly cinematic in its structure and delivery and I need to go read it again right now, bye.
